What is a Co-op?


Cooperative Education (Co-op) is a planned, progressive educational strategy through which students learn about their field of study through "hands-on" experience in the workplace. Students gain experience, networking opportunities, and academic credit in addition to earning a competitive wage.

Co-op students maintain full-time student status while working in a paid, full- or part-time, degree-related job. An Alternating Co-op student alternates semesters between full-time work and on-campus study. A Parallel Co-op student works part-time and remains on campus to attend classes at least part-time.

How is a Co-op different from an internship?


Both Co-ops and internships are opportunities for you to gain valuable work experience related to your major. Some companies may have an internship program that we at the University of Arkansas refer to as a Co-op.

How can I best present myself for co-op or internship?


Get started with your search as soon as possible. Use Razorback CareerLink to find a co-op or internship position. Connect with employers by attending job fairs and employer information sessions on campus. Meet with a career advisor to create a resume and cover letter that will grab employers' attention. Make yourself more marketable by participating in the Professional Development Institute
