Professional Development Institute Requirements

Professional Development Institute (PDI) Requirements. To be an active member of PDI:

  • Meet with your career coach at least once per academic year
  • Attend at least one workshop per semester

I. Core: (complete all)

1. Career Coaching -- Participate in Career Coaching with your PDI Career Coach. Meet at least once per year until completion of program.

2. Resume

  1. Instruction includes workshops, classroom presentation or online presentation.
  2. Assignment:
    1. Resume Review with your PDI Career Coach or another member of Career Center staff.
    2. Revision-after you revise your resume based on Resume Review, bring or send it to your PDI Career Coach.

3a. Job Search Strategies

  1. Instruction includes workshops, classroom presentation or online presentation.
  2. Assignment:
    1. Sign-up with eRecruiting and upload your Revised Resume to eRecruiting.
    2. Identify 3 jobs or internships of interest to you and related to your major.
    3. Send your PDI Career Coach a list of the job titles you found and resources used to locate the jobs or internships.
    4. In addition, also send the job description for 1 of the jobs of interest to you. You will use this job description for a Mock Interview.

3b. Graduate or Professional School Search Strategies

  1. Instruction includes workshops, classroom presentation or online presentation.
  2. Assignment:
    1. Using gradschools.com, Peterson's Guide to Graduate Schools or similar resource, identify 3 Graduate Schools with Degree Programs that will help you reach your Career Goals.
    2. Send your PDI Career Coach a list of the Schools/ Programs and resources used to locate them.
    3. In addition, also send the job description for 1 of the degree programs of interest to you. You will use this description for a Mock Interview.

4. Professional Interview Skills

  1. Instruction includes workshops, classroom presentation or online presentation.
  2. Assignment:
    1. You are ready to schedule a Mock Interview with your PDI Career Coach or another member of the Career Center staff.
    2. Send to your PDI Career Coach a copy of your Revised Resume and a copy of a job description or Graduate School Degree Program of interest to you (see #3 above).
    3. Download and review an Interview Evaluation Form from our website; your Career Coach will use this Form to provide feedback on your Interview skills.
    4. Call 479-575-2805 to schedule an appointment for your Mock Interview.

5. Diversity in the Workplace – Instruction includes workshops, classroom presentation or online presentation. For online presentation, complete assignment associated with this presentation and send to your PDI career coach.

IV. Optional Specializations

(note that these specializations are optional, and are not required to complete the PDI program)

Global Awareness Specialization (Optional)

Adding the Global Awareness Specialization demonstrates a student's interest in other cultures and languages and helps the student reflect on how this global awareness can impact the workplace. We recognize the tremendous benefit to our students of thinking globally as they enter the workplace. The Global Awareness Specialization gives students the opportunity to learn about other cultures and languages in addition to sharing their own talents and skills with those from other countries. We want to do everything we can to encourage students to expand their experiences and think with a global perspective.

Language Awareness (choose one of the following options):

  • Conversation club leader (8 weeks; once a week for an hour)
  • SILC (Spring International Language Center) – Conversation partners (9 weeks; a few hours a week)
  • Foreign language courses (completion of at least one course)
  • Attend 3 language table sessions plus view 3 foreign films
  • Other? (Approve with your career coach)

Cultural/Social Awareness (choose one of the following options):

  • Study Abroad Experience
  • BARNGA workshop (students experience culture shock)
  • Attend an ICT (International Culture Team) presentation
  • Attend a relevant Human Resources sponsored workshop (ex. Japanese immersion)
  • Participate in the ISO (International Students Organization) or other Student Cultural Organizations.
  • Attend a cultural banquet, program (i.e. Diwali Banquet, Chinese Student Organization banquet, African Student Organization banquet, International Student Organization banquet)
  • Living Library ("Check out" a person who has lived in another country)
  • Other? (Approve with your career coach)

Global Workplace Issues (choose one of the following options):

  • "In Their Shoes" workshop – (explores immigration issues)
  • Living Library ("Check out" a person who has worked in another country and discuss workplace issues in that country)
  • "Workplace etiquette in other cultures" workshop
  • Have a work experience abroad
  • CDC workshop: "Working Abroad"
  • Other? (Approve with your career coach)

Reflection meeting with your career coach OR reflection paper

  • Reflect on what you learned/gained from the Global Awareness Specialization and how it might help you prepare for your career.
